Staying at The Old Farm Barns
The Old Farm Barns were converted into modern, stylish cottages in 2017. We now have two semi-detached properties. One comprising of The Parlour our 3 bedroom and The Dairy our 1 bedroom. The second one comprising of our 2 bedroom, Houdini and our larger 1 bedroom The Root House. Both barns are comfortably off the road and offer a lovely, safe, peaceful space for adults, children and dogs. All of our cottages are dog-friendly.
As well as each holiday cottage having their own private garden, we also have a large grass paddock at the end of the cottages which is fully enclosed and open to all guests to enjoy. There are benches to sit on and spectacular views across the valley to enjoy. On the other side of the paddock, our field is often stocked with cows, sheep and/or goats which guests of all ages seem to enjoy.
The History of The Old Farm Barns
The Old Farm Barns were, up until recently, the heart of this farm operation. The Parlour was the milking parlour and would be used twice a day, 365 days a year to milk our dairy herd. The Diary was where all the milk was stored and collected from. The cows would be brought down from their housing or in from the fields and they would gather in the yard between the buildings waiting for their time to be milked. Up to 8 cows could be milked at any one time and it would take two people to do it. Houdini and the Root House stored either crops and straw or housed animals, namely calves, but from time to time geese, ducks or turkeys were kept in there too. Houdini cottage coined its name from a bull that had a tendency to escape!
The robotic milker was installed in 2011, along with a new purpose-built agriculture shed that also houses all the milking cows. This made the existing parlour and dairy redundant. It wasn’t suitable for housing animals or any good for storage so we decided to renovate it rather than let it decline any further. We wanted the conversions to stay sympathetic and modest to the surroundings and where possible retain their original features. It was important for us to reuse and reclaim as much as possible and avoid an ‘off the shelf’ look. All the bricks that you see are reclaimed from around the farm either from this very building or another one on the farm. The lintels are all original, all the old timbers are from the original trusses and all the slate window sills are reclaimed.
The kitchens were designed by us and crafted by a local carpenter who worked tirelessly with the reclaimed wood and all its character to make them fit together and look so good (not an easy feat when not one edge is straight!!) The handles were designed and crafted in our metal workshop as were all the stair banisters and shelving brackets. The whole process has been a labour of love and every detail thought through and considered. We wanted each property to retain its character but blend a modern, fresh and vibrant design throughout and we hope you enjoy it.
